NEW YORK
New York—fantastic, sublime, yet full of a gritty reality no other city can duplicate. New York is more than a large city defined by the density of its population and structures. It is, in many ways, a microcosm of the country, a truly cosmopolitan metropolis which is home to a cross-section of people from all over the world, who have come seeking fame, fortune, or simply a better life.
New York seems bigger, higher, and livelier than anywhere else in the world. Swarms of cars and people pack the roads and avenues in rush hour; horns honk, street-corner merchants call attention to their goods, and the great hum of life seems to set the whole scene into motion. At night, countless lights and neon signs create a surreal effect of night turned into day. The city never sleeps; and when the sun rises and reflects in bright orange on the city's endless skyscrapers, there is the sense, not of a new day, but of a continuum, much like a heart beat.
This intoxicating sense of being at the core of life is what gives New York its special allure, and is why, in their crazy and impassioned way, New Yorkers say they could never live in any other town.
This beautiful volume captures the essence of New York in full-color photographs. New York is a myriad of images: the magnificent golden reflection of the twin towers of the World Trade Center at sunset; the still serenity of Central Park in winter; the swirling colors of a parade in Chinatown; the explosions of light over the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July. New York is, also, its people—at times temperamental, at times indifferent, but always full of life, feeding off the energy and vitality of the city and putting that excitement back into it in a constant exchange, which makes New York such a wonderful, enigmatic, and magical place.
Marcello Bertinetti was born in Vercelli in 1952. Following a family tradition, he studied fencing, taking the art to its height. In 1973, he became the Italian fencing champion and in 1976 he participated in the Montreal Olympics.
In the meantime, Bertinetti had moved to Milan to complete his studies in engineering. But his passion for film and photography was absorbing more and more of his time and interest. In fact, in 1973, his love of photography sent him on several demanding trips across the world to work with writers from some of the most prestigious geographic magazines.
An expert scuba-diver as well, Bertinetti filmed television documentaries, most notably in Polynesia and along the coast of the Red Sea.
Angela White was born in 1957 in Vercelli and studied with the economic and commerce faculty of Turin dividing her time between school, work and photography. In 1981 she married Marcello Bertinetti and joined him in his work. She went with him on his long and difficult expeditions; in 1977 they took their first trip to Polynesia, where they made underwater films. In 1978, they filmed an interesting photographic series in India, and traveled in a well equipped camper through Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, finally, pushing themselves to the Himalayas. In the past year they have undertaken expeditions even more difficult including one to the Arctic Region and another consisting of a march of over 100 kilometers to reach the sources of the Ganges.
Valeria Manferto De Fablanls, born in Vercelli in 1951, finished her studies of literature and received her degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of Milan.
Also Interested in travel and photography, she became a follower of the Bertinettis in 1976 and joined them In several of their expeditions. She worked with them on their photographic reports for journals and television documentaries. Vissza
