New York, the city with the most distinctive skyline in the world, was forever changed by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001. But in just a few years since the tragedy, the city has recovered and embarked on a new building boom. While the successor to the World Trade Center has yet to rise from Ground Zero, dozens of other projects have emerged, reshaping and reinvigorating the city. New York Then and Now presents an unusual historic perspective, comparing scenes of the city today not only with those of the mid-nineteenth century but also with views of the skyline just before September 11. In both cases, the comparisons reveal startling changes. Once no taller than Trinity Church, the skyline of Manhattan became a mountain range of magnificent skyscrapers by the first half of the twentieth century, the island anchored in place by the imposing Brooklyn and George Washington bridges. Even after the fall of the Twin Towers, the iconic Flatiron, Chrysler, Empire State, and United Nations buildings still make New York the most recognizable and exciting metropolis in the world. From Wall Street to Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem, the old and new photos present a geographic and historic tour of Manhattan's best-known neighborhoods. Although horse-drawn carriages have given way to cars, trucks, and buses, the changing street scenes continue to throb with life. The recent building boom-a mix of new construction and conversions of office towers and industrial buildings into luxurious apartments-is most visible in Lower Manhattan, not far from Ground Zero. Post 9/11, more New Yorkers are choosing to live in Manhattan for the same reasons they have always chosen to live here-to experience the city's inextinguishable vitality. Vissza
