Discoveries _ From Our
em
WERNHER VON BRAUN FREDERICK I.ORDWW
No two people could be better qualified to write about the Solar System than Wernher von Braun, father of our space program, and his close friend and colleague Frederick 1. Ordway. New Worlds is the last major literary effort of Dr. von Braun before his death in 1977. In it, the authors place the Solar System within the cosmos and then, calling on the results of two decades of ground and space observations, examine how the Sun, planets, satellites, meteors, and comets came into being. They guide the reader through the entire planetary family, beginning with the Sun and the interplanetary environment and continuing with Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Mars, the asteroids, Jupiter and the other giant planets, and Pluto. Illustrated with 186 exceptional photographs and drawings, fifty in color, New Worlds is a book destined to become a treasured reference in astronomy and space exploration.

From 1932 to 1945, Dr. von Braun served with German Army Ordnance, directing during the war the vast Peenemünde missile complex, on the Baltic Sea. After the war, he came to the United States, serving during the 1960s Apollo decade as director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, Alabama. He then moved to Washington, at first as deputy associate administrator for advanced planning, at NASA headquarters and later as vice-president for engineering and development at Fairchild Industries. He was the recipient of innumerable honors and degrees, including the National Medal of Science, presented by President Ford.
Frederick I. Ordway is a widely pubhshed author of books on rocketry and astronautics, including The Rockets' Red Glare, coauthored with Dr. von Braun, in 1976. He started his career in rocketry at Reaction Motors, Inc., and later joined the von Braun team at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency and NASA-Marshall. He subsequently was a professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and special research assistant to the administrator at the Energy Research and Development Administration in Washington, transferring in 1977 to the new Department of Energy. He is also astronautics consultant to the Alabama Space and Rocket Center, in Huntsville. Vissza
