NEW CLASSICISM
Omnibus Volume
The term Classical points always to something enduring, with a
significance that is independent of all circumstances of time. In
those things we name classical we recognise a kind of timeless
present that is contemporaneous and at ease with every
historical period. Demetri Porphyrios
New Classicism is an unbiased survey of the state of Classicism
today, that traces the renewal of interest in classical ideas in
architecture, from its most abstract to its most flamboyant
expressions. Enlisting the support of many influential authors
and architects who have helped to develop ideas in New
Classicism, it portrays theoretical thinking on classical

The opening series of definitive papers includes an essay by
Leon Krier, a new contribution from Sir John Summerson,
Demetri Porphyrios' highly influential article 'Classicism is not
a Style* and an extract from the new book and television series
by Oliver Taplin, Greek Fire.
Both the theoretical writings and examples of current work are
divided into three major sections. The more Figurative
Classicism is illustrated by such architects as Quinlan Terry and
Allan Greenberg, whilst the classical architecture which takes an
abstract form includes a selection of internationally renowned
European architects, in particular from Spain, Italy and Greece.
There is a concise section on Post-Modern Classicism with a
critical essay by Charles Jencks and papers by Robert Stern and
Christian Norberg-Schulz.
Perhaps the most important aspect of New Classicism is its
relevance to urban projects and theories. Special attention is
devoted to urban concepts, with articles by theorists who have
helped shape present day thinking, such as Aldo Rossi and Colin
Rowe. There is a substantial representation of the work of Leon
Krier, Jaquelin Robertson, Andres Duany and Rob Krier.
Not only is this essential collection destined to become a
major source book for teachers and students, but the appeal of its
evocative texts and images is universal.
