Soon after the oral contraceptives came into
general use, neurological disorders suspected of
being complications were reported from many
parts of the world.,
There has been considerable controversy—
which in the minds of many is still unresolved
—about the casual relationship between the
use of the Pill (as it is now generally called)
and several neurological conditions. In this
book Dr. Bickerstaff follows the development
of thought on this controversy and presents
the arguments for and against such a relation-
ship.
A large part of this book is, of necessity,
devoted to the problem of cerebrovascular
accidents. The author has here interwoven into
the account his own experience during two
ten-year periods before and after the introduc-
tion of the Pill. The patients concerned were
drawn from a wide area. He also considers the
relationship of the use of the Pill to the
development of involuntary movements, to
migraine, and to epilepsy. The author's aim... Tovább

There has been considerable controversy—
which in the minds of many is still unresolved
—about the casual relationship between the
use of the Pill (as it is now generally called)
and several neurological conditions. In this
book Dr. Bickerstaff follows the development
of thought on this controversy and presents

A large part of this book is, of necessity,
devoted to the problem of cerebrovascular
accidents. The author has here interwoven into
the account his own experience during two
ten-year periods before and after the introduc-
tion of the Pill. The patients concerned were
drawn from a wide area. He also considers the
relationship of the use of the Pill to the
development of involuntary movements, to
migraine, and to epilepsy. The author's aim
throughout is to give a clear, unbiased account
and to indicate where a relationship seems
certain, where it is merely possible, and where
the available evidence is too scanty to justify
dogmatic statements.
Those who are interested in this field will
here find collected in one book as much
information as possible from the vast amount
of literature that has appeared on the subject,
and will be provided with some guidelines as to
when, from the neurological point of view, the
use of oral contraceptives should be avoided,
and about the possible warnings for those
already using the Pill that neurological
complications may occur.
Dr. Bickerstaff is Senior Consultant
Neurologist at the Midland Centre for
Neurosurgery and Neurology, Smethwick,
Birmingham, England. His other works are
Neurological Examination in Clinical Practice
and Neurology for Nurses. Vissza
