This book gives a broad and generalized picture of life in Russia on the eve of the Revolution of 1905. The narrative is based on events which took place in the town of Sormovo.
Pyotr Andreyevich Zalomov, a Sormovo worker, and his mother Anna Kirillovna served as prototypes for the main characters in Gorky's novel, embodied in Pavel Vlasov, a revolutionary, and his mother Nilovna, a workman's wife.
The life and activities of the Zalo-movs presented Gorky with material from which he created typical characters and situations. Through the fascinating people in this book he expressed his concept—a concept born of much hard experience—of the beauty and greatness of those who are self-lessly devoted to the most advanced ideas of their day and to the cause of the people.
In 1954 the Foreign Languages Publishing House is planning to put out an English edition of A Book for Parents by A. S. Makarenko, known to English readers by his other books: The Road to Life and Learning to Live. A... Tovább

A Book for Parents depicts the Soviet family, with many good and bad examples taken from life. It shows exceptional understanding of the psychology of children and parents, and is filled with typical character portrayals. Child education is treated by Makarenko from the viewpoint of social aims.
"The care and upbringing of children is a big, a serious, and a terribly responsible task, and it is, of course, also a difficult task," writes Makarenko in A Book for Parents. "No easy tricks can help you out here. Once you have a child, it means that for many years to come you must give him all your power of concentration, all your attention, and all your strength of character. You must be not only father and guardian of your children. You must also be organizer of your own life, because your quality as an educator is entirely bound up with your activities as a citizen and your feelings as an individual." Vissza
