Mother Teresa of Calcutta, wearing her simple white and blue sari, is one of the world's most revered figures but for many years she was only an obscure nun teaching in a convent in India. This book telis of the call from God which started it all - the call to go out alone onto the streets of Calcutta and live and work with the poorest of the poor. Mother Teresa's work has spread worldwide as her new order grew from the few courageous girls who first joined her in the cramped quarters she originally occupied at No 14, Creek Lane to an International community, one of the largest in the Román Catholic Church. In 1979 Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel peace prize because she "advances peace in the most fundamental way possible, by her extraordinary reaffirmation of the inviolability of humán dignity," said Róbert McNamara in recommending her for the award. This rare set of photographs, culled from priváté albums, libraries or retrieved from mislaid boxes in the basement of forgottén convents, highlight all the main events in this remarkable life, set against the backdrop of India, that most colourful of countries. Mark Tully was born in Calcutta, the home of Mother Teresa's order. He went to school in the Himalayan town of Darjeeling, where she served her novitiate. He has been the BBC's correspondent for Delhi for more than twenty years and has reported on many historic events in India and the neighbouring countries, including the Bangladesh War, the hanging of Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the assassinations oflndira and Rajiv Gandhi. In 1992 he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's national honours. Vissza
