Drawing upon both ancient sources and the latest scholarship, the author views India in its broadest sense, going beyond today's nation to embrace those areas that long orbited in its cultural sphere —Afghanistan, Pakistan,- Bangladesh, Nepal, Burma, and Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
