the poetry of W. H. AUDEN
the disenchanted island
MONROE K. SPEARS
Mr. Spears deals comprehensively with the entire body of Auden's work—his earliest volume of poetry, privately printed in 1928, his later poems, and his operas, songs, and other compositions for music. This is the only book to discuss Auden's recent poetry and criticism, and it is the first to have Mr. Auden's co-operation in the effort to achieve factual accuracy and completeness. In a new preface, written for this edition, the author reviews Auden's work since 1962, including About the House, and the revision of the Collected Shorter Poems. The author's basic aim is to set the facts in order, clear away misconceptions and obstacles to understanding, and provide the background and context for full appreciation of the poetry. A detailed chronology, a bibliography of Auden's writings, and a first-line index to his poetry, with the publication history of each poem, are included.

". . . the best book by anybody about a living poet. The immense versatility! of this great poet has met its match in the scholarship and intellectual power of his critic." allen tate

"I thought I knew Alid en and I thought I loved his poetry, but when I began to read this book I found I had not properly understood either."
cyril connolly, Sunday Times (London)
"The ability to interpret, evaluate, and trace boundaries in dealing with the powerful talents of a contemporary still in active career requires rare gifts of insight and of organization, and these Spears proves himself to have in this yaluable survey of a poet who has often accurately detected the moral1; and spiritual storm centers in the climate of his
times." I The New Yorker
