For the last forty years of his life Monet lived and worked at his country house in Giverny on the Seine northwest of Paris. There he planted thriving flower gardens, built bridges and trellises, and cultivated the renowned water-lily pond. These were to be the subjects of the artist's great series paintings, the best-known of which are the Water Lilies. Eighty-one works from the Giverny period are included in this book, which is based on the exhibition Monet's Years at Giverny: Beyond Impressionism at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the St. Louis Art Museum.
The book traces Monet's development from master Impressionist painter to herald of twen-tieth-century abstraction. The earliest paintings shown—made beginning in 1883, when Monet moved to Giverny—record the nearby river valley, the fields, and the neighboring villages. Finally, as age and failing vision limited his wanderings, Monet stayed on his own property and painted only the motifs he himself had so consciously arranged there. The Japanese Footbridge series and the Garden Path group were the first fruits of this close study, which culminated in the celebrated Late Water Lilies series. Panels of this great work were installed in the Orangerie of the Tuileries in 1927, after the artist's death, and dedicated to Francé.
