This anthology offers students a carefully edited selection of the most influential and enduring interpretations of key political theorists. Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Burke, Bentham, Mill and Marx are the subjects for discussion; included are classic articles by Isaiah Berlin, Brian Barry, J G A Pocock, Alan Ryan and others.
Unlike a commentary written from a single point of view, this selection of articles highlights the fact that understanding past thinkers requires choosing between interpretations. A general introduction to the volume examines how we may go about understanding the major theorists of the past and the value of doing so. Also included are reading lists giving accessible editions of the most important texts for each theorist and a selection of the secondary literature.
No other anthology offers such an up-to-date and extensive guide to the key issues at stake in the interpretative debate. Students and teachers will find this volume an invaluable text for undergraduate courses in the history of modern political thought.
Jack Lively is Professor of Politics and Andrew Reeve is Lecturer in Politics, both at the University of Warwick.
