THE MONK OF FARNE A translation of the Monk*s meditations as preserved in a Latin manuscript at Durham Translated by a Nun of Stanbrooke Introduced and Edited by f-)om Hugh Farmer of Quarr Abbey Fr Hugh Farmer, a Benedictine monk of the twentieth century, provides in his introduction a picture of the Benedictine Abbey and its traditions, in North East England, from which the author of these meditations went out in the fourteenth century to a little chapel on Farne Island. Gogol Translated by Rosemary Edmonds A new translation of Gogol's glowing description of the ceremóniái of the Orthodox Liturgy: an artist's eye-witness account which brings the reader into the crowded church where the stately and mysterious rites take place in front of him. Gogol wrote to deepen both the reader's understanding of what happened in the Liturgy and his devotion to what is known in the West as the Mass; and the book is at once instructive and devotional. Nothing of the author's skill has been lost in Rosemary Edmonds's translation. Vissza
