The only complete survey of the drama in Germany, this book
begins with the rise of Naturalism in the 1890's and traces all
the main trends since that time. In the words of the New States-
man, it is "comprehensive, accurate and well organised," and
"may well become the standard textbook on the subject."
The rich and fascinating history of the period, which em-
braced Naturalism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Neo-Realism, the
Brechtian Epic Theater, and much more, is traced in detail.
The two outstanding dramatists of recent years, Bertolt Brecht
and Carl Zuckmayer, are each given a full chapter. The study
also includes a detailed presentation of the Austrian and Swiss
playwrights who have recently made their mark: Hochwalder,
Frisch, and Diirrenmatt. Earlier chapters cover Hermann Suder-
mann, Gerhart Hauptmann, Arthur Schnitzler, Hugo von Hof-
mannsthal, Frank Wedekind, Ernst Toller, Georg Kaiser, and
others.
