Misalliance begins innocuously enough at a sedate country-house party in Surrey. Suddenly the scene is invaded by Lina Szczepanowska, who drops from the sky 'in full acrobatic trapeze dress', and from then on the play explodes into a fantastic chaos, a dazzling plethora of action and ideas.
Misalliance brilliantly explores the incongruities of human nature and family life and belongs with Shaw's finest work. It is the first masterpiece in which, like Pirandello, he shattered the conventional structures of the 'well-made play' and, prefiguring lonesco, let in the modern Theatre of the Absurd.
This volume also contains Shaw's one-act burlesque. The Fascinating Foundling.
