Among .the major painters of this century, few exert so immediate - if myste'rious - an appeal as Joan Miró. Among .the major painters of this century, few exert so immediate - if myste'rious - an appeal as Joan Miró. He was born in 1893 in Barcelona, where he received his training and acquired an early admiration for Catalan art, the popular arts and the extravagant fantasy of Gaudi's architecture. Affected in turn by Cézanne and the Fauves, he eventually settled in Paris, where he was further influenced by his compatriots Picasso and Gris. During the 1920s he became a leading member of the Surrealists: indeed, André Breton, the chief spokesman of the movement, described Miró as ' the most Surrealist of us all '. During his long and prolific career Miró has drawn inspiration from such varied sources as his own immediate surroundings, prehistoric and primitive art, and the paintings of the old masters. Equally diverse have been his methods and materials: oil paint, rope, hair, sand; canvas, paper, ceramics. Whatever medium he uses, he fascinates us by the expressive symbolism of his delicately traced, highly coloured forms - evoking by turns the innocence of child art and the promptings of the subconscious - and, above all, by the sheer spontaneity and joy which is the keynote of his work.
