Since its first appearance in 1957, Aircraft of the Royal Air Force has been published in three editions and has become widely recog-nized as the standard work of reference on its subject. It is therefore fitting that 1968, which witnesses the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal Air Force, should alsó see the publication of a completely revised and up-to-date edition of this popular work.
The new and enlarged edition contains full-length treatments, with photographs and three-view drawings, of all the new aircraft which have recently or will shortly enter service with the RAF, together with a complete re-editing of the earlier text to incorporate many important research findings on the operational or manufacturing histories of RAF aircraft which have come to light in the last five years.
In addition, many hitherto unpublished photographs and improved drawings supersede those which appeared in earlier editions.
This greatly expanded text, as well as covering new aircraft types, includes compre-hensive and up-dated accounts of stich established types as the Lightning (to F.Mk.6), the strategic reconnaissance and tanker versions of the Victor, the later versions of the Canberra, Hunter, Javelin, Jet Provost and Wessex, as well as an extended, and illustrated, outline history of the RAF's role from the days of the Sopwith Snipe to those of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier.
The meticulously complete handling in text, photographs and three-view drawings is accorded to such new British aircraft as the Harrier VTOL strike fighter, the Nimród for Coastal Command, the VC10 and Belfast of Air Support Command, the Andover tactical transport, the Dominie advanced navigation trainer and the Basset communications aircraft: alsó included are the RAF versions of the American Phantom, Hercules and F-iii as well

by OWEN THETFORD
(Second revised edition)
'When, as in this case> a high proportion of the photographs are excitingly new and the data are as comprehensive, accurate and readable as one has learnt to expect from Owen Thetford, the result is something to treasure and an indispensable work of reference.' John W. R. Taylor, Aeroplane
'Not only does it include technical data, photographs^ and line drawings of every aircraft used by the Royal Navy since the dawn of serious military aviation> but short historical notes on the air squadrons to which the various aircraft were supplied and brief mention of the more important operations in which they took part are alsó added.'
