Kapitza's Life and Discoveries by F. Ked-rov gives an account of the life and creative activities of Pyotr Kapitza from the author's 'personal impressions' and documents drawing on Kapitza's many speeches and articles. Pyotr Kapitza (1894-1984) was one of the most distinguished Soviet scientists. The importance of his work was already recognized in 1929 when he was made both a Fellow of the London Royal Society (the first non-British member in 200 years) and a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Since then he had received numerous awards in many countries, including the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1978. His long and eventful life began near pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg where he studied after the revolution under loffe. There followed a long period in Cambridge, first as a student and then as a close colleague of Ernest Rutherford, before he returned to the Soviet Union.
