MICHAEL WILCOX was born in 1943 and became a full-time playwright
in 1974. His first professional commissions were with the Tyneside
Theatre Company's Stagecoach, which toured schools and colleges in
the North East. He subsequently spent a year as resident playwright at
the Dovecot Arts Centre, Stockton-on-Tees. The first draft of Rents was
written in 1976. It was performed at the Traverse Theatre Club in

later that year. After Rents, Michael Wilcox wrote Accounts for the
Traverse in 1981, which transferred to Riverside Studios after a
successful run at the Festival. His television plays include Clean Sweep
and Midnight Feast for STV and Cricket for BBC's Plays for Tomorrow
series.
METHUEN'S NEW THEATRESCRIPTS series aims to close the gap
between the appearance of new work in the theatre and its publication in
script form, and to make available new or unconventional work which
might otherwise not appear in print.
The prospect of a playwright being published as well as seen is not as
rosy these days. It's therefore a welcome sight to find Methuen launching
a cheap, accessible, easily readable series of paperbacks.'
