AGRICULTURE IN WESTERN EUROPE The problems of agriculture-low farm incomes, rising surpluses, expensive subsidies-have made themselves felt throughout Western Europe. They have threatened to disrupt the European Economic Community and were a major factor in Britain's failure to gain admittance to the EEC. To solve these problems, it is necessary to understand how they have arisen. Michael Tracy shows how most European countries failed to adapt their agriculture in response to the Great Depression of the late 19th century and the economic crisis of the 1930s, and demonstrates that through this failure an archaic farming structure has been preserved. He alsó analyses the present agricultural policies of Western European countries, shows the need for a drastic adaptation to modern conditions and indicates how this could be brought about without undue hardship to the farming community. This book is indispensable both to those concerned at the extent to which conflicting farming interests impede closer integration of the economies of the Western world and to those interested in the problems of agriculture as such. Michael Tracy, an expert in the international aspects of agriculture, now working in the OECD, is eminently well equipped for the task of writing on this subject. His work is an important contribution to scholarship. Vissza
