Mammals of Australia
Of over two hundred species native to Australia, one hundred and twenty one are marsupials, those strange animals, to some extent special to this country, whose females carry their embryonic young after birth in a pouch until they are fully developed. They include the majestic Red Kangaroo, the Koala and the tiny Marsupial Mouse. The placental mammals—those that bear their young fully developed from the womb—are more akin to those found in other parts of the world, but among the Australian species there is a fascinating range of native rats, mice, bats and flying foxes.
Perhaps the most curious of all members of the Animal Kingdom are the monotremes, an ancient class, which, except for two Australian species, is now quite extinct. These last relics of a vanished section of the Earth's animal population are the Platypus and the Echidna. They are mammals whose young are hatched from eggs, yet feed in the early stages of their development from their mother's... Tovább

Perhaps the most curious of all members of the Animal Kingdom are the monotremes, an ancient class, which, except for two Australian species, is now quite extinct. These last relics of a vanished section of the Earth's animal population are the Platypus and the Echidna. They are mammals whose young are hatched from eggs, yet feed in the early stages of their development from their mother's milk.
Few writers can be better qualified to present the full range of Australia's mammalian life than Michael Morcombe. Not only is he a naturalist of distinction, with many books on wildlife subjects | to his credit; he is also a photographer whose brilliantly perceptive work few others in his field can rival.
Mammals of Australia offers the reader a comprehensive guide to the three classes of this section of our fauna—marsupials, placentals and monotremes in a volume in which a lucid and informative text is complemented throughout by glowing full colour illustrations.
H
Michael Morcombe is one of Australia's leading naturalist writer—photographers, with a string of impressive books on Australia's natural history to his credit. He spent many years as an amateur naturalist, developing his unique techniques for photographing shy and rare species of plant and animal life before turning professional. He is perhaps best known for his superb photography, which in addition to being widely reproduced in Australian books and magazines, has also featured in many overseas publications. He recently devoted two years to travelling many thousands of miles throughout Australia gathering new material for his books and nature library. In this series which includes Mammals of Australia, Birds of Australia and Wildflowers of Australia can be seen some of the breathtaking results of that journey.
Apart from his skills as an author and photographer, Michael Morcombe is also a fine artist, and has illustrated many of his books and articles with his delicate drawings of plants, animals and birds. Michael Morcombe lives in Western Australia with his wife who assists him in his work, and they both share a deep concern for and are active in combating the growing problems of conservation in Australia.
