Forty Channel CB
Starting January 1, 1977 dealers will be offering 40 channel CB unts. The additional 17 channels should help to absorb the traffic of new OB'ers. However, the original 23 channels should remain just as crowded as they are currently.
There are problems with forty channel CB. FCC tests show that there is a higher level of IM distortion in these additional frequencies. This may result in more distorted signals and more bleeding on these channels.
Those CB'ers with 23 channel units, who want the additional channels will have to buy new units. The FCC has ruled out private conversions. Dealers will have to apply for permission to convert 23 channel units to 40 channel models.
When all things are considered, 40 channel CB may end up being a temporary measure. It won't relieve the overcrowding of the CB channels. Nor will it provide distortion free frequencies for CB'ers.
