Modern Mexico is a fantastically fertile breeding ground for contemporary architecture and design.
The nation is an exotic, sensual mix of cultural influences. The mysterious monolithic architecture of Mexico's pre-Columbian civilizations, the baroque, tile-clad cathedrals of the Catholic conquistadors, and the rugged and massive proportions of the colonial hacienda are all visible in the work of Mexico's new generation of modern masters.
The defining elements of Mexican architecture remain the courtyard, the wall, and the uninhibited use of color — the quintessentially Mexican palette of sun-drenched pink, yellow, and blue. But contemporary architects and designers are bringing to these a fascination with texture and monumental scale, creating surfaces from adobe, rusted steel, and weathered timber and stone, and spaces of daringly massive volume.

Herbert Ypma, the author and animating force behind World Design, set out to create an entirely fresh and innovative approach to interior design in this new series of visual source books for designers, architects, artists, students, and everyone in any way interested in home decoration. Harnessing the special strengths of local traditions in country and city to the tastes of the contemporary global village, he shows us all the true elements of our ideal interior spaces.
In a cosmopolitan life, Herbert Ypma has continued to travel widely after growing up in Holland, Spain, the United States, and Australia. He was founder of the award-winning foreign magazine Interior Architecture and is author of the highly acclaimed India Modern (1994).
