It is not surprising that at many moments in American history, journalists have been accused of unfairness and abuse of power. We are living today in one such moment. It is, perhaps, particularly painful to journalists, because it follows an unusual period during which the prestige of the news média was extremely high, and many believed that American journalism had found a solution to the traditional contradictions in the social role of the média-contradictions between priváté ownership and public responsibility, for example, and between the subjectivity of news judgment and the demand for objectivity. -daniel hallin, University of California, San Diego recent issues of MEDIA STUDIES JOURNAL Covering the Courts, Winter 1998 In a time when the vast majority of citizens experience trials through news média accounts, how should journalists cover the courts? To answer this question, the essays in this collection explore the relationship between freedom of the press and the right to a fair trial, the prospects for cameras in the courts and the perspectives of judges and attorneys on the news média. Defining Moments in Journalism, Spring 1997 Although journalists rarely have time to look back, only in hindsight do individual moments acquire layers of meaning that give them great significance. The essays in this issue reflect on the large turning points since the 194OS when American journalists began to think about their work and practice their craft differently. Covering the 1996 Presidential Campaign, Winter 1997 The 1996 presidential election raised new challenges for reporters, from scripted conventions to intricate money stories. Journalists, and anyone who cares about improving the performance of the news média, must respond if they are to hold up their end of democratic dialogue in the next presidential campaign. Journalists in Peril, Fali 1996 One very important lesson runs through all the stories of threats to journalists contained in this issue: The people who would intimidate and kill journalists are usually terrified that they will be exposed. The authors explore the threats that reporters face around the world-and the best ways to fight back. Vissza
