MEASURING THE CONCEPTS OF PERSONALITY
DONALD W. FISKE
Professor Fiske presents in this basic text a com-
prehensive view of personality measurement that is
well suited for senior and graduate courses and
seminars in personality theory, applied and industrial
psychology and lests and measurements. Primarily
concerned with improving the relationship between
actual measuring operations and the ideas, con-
cepts. and variables of personality theories, the
book delineates what in personality is measured,
how measurement is undertaken, and what meth-
odological pitfalls await the unwary student of
personality. It does not treat at any length the
technological aspects of psychological test con-
struction, but analyzes in meticulous detail the
theoretical issues that underlie the creation of any
instrument that purports to measure a personality
variable.

MEASURING THE CONCEPTS OF PERSONALITY
DONALD W. FISKE
Professor Fiske presents in this basic text a com-
prehensive view of personality measurement that is
well suited for senior and graduate courses and
seminars in personality theory, applied and industrial
psychology and lests and measurements. Primarily
concerned with improving the relationship between
actual measuring operations and the ideas, con-
cepts. and variables of personality theories, the
book delineates what in personality is measured,
how measurement is undertaken, and what meth-
odological pitfalls await the unwary student of
personality. It does not treat at any length the
technological aspects of psychological test con-
struction, but analyzes in meticulous detail the
theoretical issues that underlie the creation of any
instrument that purports to measure a personality
variable.
After analyzing the processes involved in personal-
ity and its measurement, the book discusses the
design and evaluation of methods appropriate for
measuring any specified concept. The general plan
presented suggests that the researcher consider
exactly what it is he wants to measure, examine the
nature of measurement with particular reference to
measuring personality, and explore the actual
measuring process. The author stresses the neces-
sity for intensive analysis of each concept being
measured and the need for thorough examination
of the rational and empirical links between such a
concept and the measuring operations directed
toward it. A related emphasis is on the nature of
personality phenomena in general, and more
particularly, on the subject's experience and
behavior while being measured.
MEASURING THE CONCEPTS OF PERSONALITY
is the third book in Perspectives In Personality, a
new series on personality theory and research,
edited by Ralph W. Heine, Professor of Psychology,
University of Michigan. These tutorial books for
undergraduate and graduate students are written
by outstanding psychologists in their specialties.
Basic principles are presented and documented
with the current research in each subject. Taken
together, the series will comprise a wide-ranging
and authoritative collection of studies in both the
theoretical and applied areas of personality. Books
already published in the series include Interaction
Concepts Ot Personality by Robert C. Carson and
Personality In Social Theory by Patricke Johns
Heine.
