Tliis latest story of the Whiteoaks brings their chronicle very much up to date, for it opens in the spring of 1939. Jalna is then alive to the menace of the times, but it is more immediately excited over Renny's trip to Ireland to see a horse recommended to him as a possible winner of the Grand National. Sarah, Finch's enigmatic wife, makes her reappearance, and their queer half hostile, half passionate relations are resumed.

With Wakefield in the R. A. F., Renny and Piers in France, Finch playing an unexpected part in the miracle of Dunkirk, and old and young at Jahia living for the news from day to day, the "Whiteoaks have their full share of trials and triumphs. As a story of the new and old generations facing the perils and problems of to-day, this eighth volume of the series will more than fulfil the expectations of the thousands of readers who have thus far followed their fortunes.
