Text by Maurizio Taddei Foreword by Clement Greenberg
India—an exotic, timeless land, yet a land as immediate as today's headlines. With this volume as your guide, you can journey through that land and marvel at those ancient monuments and works of art that sustain and express this age-old civilization. Over 100 stunning full-color photographs, all taken especially for this volume, convey the majesty and mystery of their subjects: the stupendous free-standing temples, astonishing rock-cut chambers, intricate carvings and monstrous figures, superb paintings, fine bronzes, lovely terra cottas. In particular, you will follow the long tradition of ancient India's sculpture, which has, as Clement Greenberg says in his foreword, "a unique vitality.
No other tradition of sculpture can show its like."
The main text presents all these works in the total context of their times and societies. Drawing upon both ancient sources and the latest scholarship, the author views India in its broadest sense, going beyond today's nation to embrace those areas that long orbited in its cultural sphere —Afghanistan, Pakistan,- Bangladesh, Nepal, Burma, and Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
A special feature of the book is the excerpts from the great sacred, philosophical, literary, historical, practical, and other traditional books that have shaped and expressed Indian culture. These, when read alongside the main text and the illustrations, add another dimension to this trip of discovery through India.
Additional important elements that round out this portrait of ancient India include a map; a chronological chart of India through the ages; plans of sites and individual buildings; a list of selected books that complement the text; and a unique feature of this series, a list of North American museum collections featuring Indian works of art.
