PREFACE
This textbook contains the mathematical teaching material which was first introduced for teaching grammar schools in 1979 and then modified in 1986. It is based on the knowledge learned in primary school. The chap-ter titles show that we shall repeat the material studied in the last years of primary school, but now it will be reorganized and taught in more depth.
The aims of grammar school teaching are to develop logical thinking and to provide broader mathematical knowledge. Obviously, a deeper knowledge requires stronger foundations. The basic concepts, définitions, facts and theorems are therefore mentioned even in the introductory chap-ters. Numbers will be discussed in a more detailed way than earlier. The first few chapters are written in a discursive style. The approach may seem unusual at first, so we recommend that you read them several times. The approach will soon become natural and makes it easy to deal with math-ematics more rigorously.
We devote the early chapters to showing how the mathematical concepts were created and why proofs are necessary. The discussion in other chapters will be more compact.
This book contains fundamental and supplementary material. These are not separated from each other in the book, but in général small print refers to supplementary facts. Certain problems will require a knowledge of the supplementary material. These problems will be denoted by *.
