HERE, comprehensively revised and appreciably enlarged, is the third edition of the Mathematics Dictiönary, a standard reference book that has maintained, from its inception, a valued reputation for precise, thorough, and definitive presentation. Scientists, engineers, mathematicians, businessmen, teachers, students, and many others, amateur and professional, concerned with the meaning of mathematical terms have consistently found the volume well suited to their respective needs. Like its predecessors, the third edition is neither a simple word dictiönary nor an encyclopedia. Combining features of both, it is, rather, a correlated condensation of mathematical concepts designed for effortless, time-saving reference work. During preparation of this edition, the editors have sought clarity and usefulness above all else, striving to make the book an essential and sufficient source for all those who will consult it frequently in this age of unparalleled scientific exploitation,...

During preparation of this edition, the editors have sought clarity and usefulness above all else, striving to make the book an essential and sufficient source for all those who will consult it frequently in this age of unparalleled scientific exploitation, technological refinement, and interdisciplinary communication. Defining nearly 8000 terms indispensable to the successful pursuit of mathematics studies, including more than 800 terms that have gained currency since the last edition, the Mathematics Dictiönary includes topics in which interest is currently growing-category theory, measure theory, linear and dynamic programming-as well as such fields as arithmetic and calculus, differential geometry, the theory of functions of real and complex variables, advanced calculus, differential equations, the theory of groups and matrices, the theory of summability, point-set topology, integrál equations, the calculus of variations, analytic mechanics, the theory of potentials, game theory, statistics, modern algebra, and number theory. In addition, the contributors, all expert in their respective fields, have approached this revision from the more recent points of view, such as those of set theory and group theory, and have given particular attention to secondary mathematics as offered today. As in prior editions, hundreds of illustrations and formulas have been incorporated to exemplify and reinforce the textual commentary. Pronunciation of mathematical terms and an extensive system of crossreferencing have alsó been retained from former editions. By means of the cross-referencing, a reader can attain an understanding of concepts in which he has no background merely by looking up unfamiliar terms in the definition at hand and following this procedure down to familiar concepts. Another feature new with this edition is the inclusion of birth and death dates for those who have significantly contributed to the advancement of mathematics. Alsó, there is a detailed listing of contents through which a reader can efficiently locate the material he seeks in the appendixes. In the appendixes, too, usefulness has been the cri(Continued on back flap)
