The subject of this book is the changing global scene and its impact on different dimensions of the development process - economic growth, commodity production and trade, resource management and human capital formation, labour markets and female employment, foreign investment, development assistance, and development studies. The discussions begin with an assessment of the main trends and changes in the world economy and the challenges they pose in the policy-making area, followed by analyses of the transformations in the former centrally planned economies of Eastern Europe. Case-studies are also made of selected African economies; Finland; and the East Asian successes.
