MARYLAND
Photography by Steve Uzzell Text by Carl Bode
The geography of Maryland encompasses a broad range of terrain from the lonely sea barrier isle of Assateague to the steep mountains of the Appalachian Divide. Maryland's most prominent feature, the Chesapeake Bay, gives her a total shoreline of more than 5,000 miles. World famous oysters, crabs, and clams come from the Bay and dozens of waterfront towns are dependent on these fisheries. Pleasure craft fill numerous harbors, including historic Annapolis, and freighters dock frequently in Baltimore — one of the world's great ports. Sweeping across a portion of the Delmarva Peninsula, the Eastern Shore has maintained a traditional and independent lifestyle based on agriculture and fishing.
The Piedmont, to the west of the Bay, is about fifty miles wide with low rolling hills, fertile valleys, and numerous towns. Beyond the Piedmont lie the Blue Ridge, Hagerstown Valley, and finally a triangular region containing part of the... Tovább

Beyond the Piedmont lie the Blue Ridge, Hagerstown Valley, and finally a triangular region containing part of the Allegheny Mountains, Deep Creek Lake, and Savage River State Forest.
In this major work of exquisite images, Steve Uzzell captures the spirit, beauty, and diversity of Maryland. He interprets her landscape, cities, and people with great sensitivity. Uzzell's artistic eye, combined with his mastery of photographic techniques and his understanding of Maryland, has produced this colorful essay covering the length and breadth of the state.
You can almost hear the roar of Muddy Creek Falls and the resounding silence at Antietam National Battlefield. Blurred hooves streak at the Preakness, skipjacks gracefully tack on the Chesapeake, and Fourth of July fireworks explode over Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
A space shuttle touches down on monitors at Coddard Space Flight Center, the auctioneer's voice signals high bidder at a tobacco auction, and sunbathers fill the popular Ocean City beach. Here too is Fort McHenry, midshipmen on Commencement Day, and the stately Wye Oak shading another generation of Marylanders under its spreading branches.
A distinguished and widely acclaimed author and professor, Dr. Carl Bode gives the reader an insight into the Old Line State. He does this through a succinct survey of the state's social, economic, and cultural modes, with an emphasis on the question, "What does it mean to live in Maryland?" To the answer he brings both affection and understanding.
Together, photographer and author present a magnificent feast for the eyes—a delightful tapestry of images and words that is a celebration of the State of Maryland.
Jacket photograph: Classic Maryland: Sandy Point Lighthouse, skipjacks, sailboats, and the Chesapeake Bay below the twin spans of the William Preston Lane Memorial Bridge which connects the state's mainland to her Eastern Shore.
