Mary Norton's timeless stories about the Borrowers have entertained successive generations of children ever since the first story was published in 1952.
The Borrowers are a race of tiny little people who live hidden away, in the nooks and crannies of quiet old houses - or wherever they can find a safe convenient place. They own nothing, but borrow everything from us 'human beans' who live around and above them.
This omnibus volume includes Diana Stanley's charming original illustrations in black and white. It includes the four classic stories about the Borrowers' precarious existence: The Borrowers, The Borrowers Afield, The Borrowers Afloat and The Borrowers Aloft.
Mary Norton spent much of her childhood in a large Georgian house which later became the model for Firbank Hall in The Borrowers. She was educated at convent schools and spent a happy year as an actress at the Old Vic before she married and went to live in Portugal.

Mary Norton spent much of her childhood in a large Georgian house which later became the model for Firbank Hall in The Borrowers. She was educated at convent schools and spent a happy year as an actress at the Old Vic before she married and went to live in Portugal.
During the Second World War she was evacuated to New York and struggled to support herself and her four children while her husband was in the Navy. It was at this time that Mary Norton began writing in earnest - short stories, articles, translations - but it was not until later that she wrote down some of the stories she told her children.
When she returned to England she went back to the stage for a while, but a new career was beginning. In 1945 her first children's book The Magic Bed-Knob was published, followed by Bonfires and Broomsticks. These two stories were later published as one volume, Bed-Knob and Broomstick. Then came The Borrowers in 1952 which was awarded the Carnegie Medal, and was followed by The Borrowers Afield, The Borrowers Afloat and The Borrowers Aloft.
