This is Mary Lavin's first collection of stories since The shrine was published in 1977. She has lost none of her miraculous power to move her readers. The situations she chooses are simple, often commonplace; but within their context she explores the motives, thoughts and feelings of the human heart and mind without ever, seemingly, striking a false note. I often heard my mother claim, in my father's hearing, that she had taken an instant dislike to him the first time she saw him. Yet he seemed to regard this as a tribute. Perhaps he thought it made his subsequent conquest of her the more impressive.' Vissza
