Fülszöveg

This monograph on Martin Martincek, appearing on the occasion of his retrospective exhibition at the Slovak National Gallery, is in fact the very first attempt at an assessment of the lifelong work of one of the most eminent 20th century Slovak pho-tographers. The publication presents Martincek's work in its vast, extraordinary generic rangé, which ensued thanks to the author's unflinching efforts systematically to meet his design — to create "an artistic glossary of the Liptov landscape". Martincek moulds his life topic at various levels — from detailed pictures of natural objects and ele-ments that make up this hilly region, through bar-riers of quiet landscape nooks, details of originál architecture, still-lifes found inside wooden dwel-lings, up to photographic episodes from the lives of elderly folks, often social outsiders but who have, nevertheless, succeeded in living in harmony with the natural order of all that exists. Nostalgia for the vanishing unity between man and his natural world — a long-standing topic in Slovak art — finds as if a definitive form in Martincek's work. In somé 160 reproductions the publication intro-duces a representative selection of Martincek's photographic work, including many as yet unpub-lished, or practically unknown photographs. In addition, it carries two texts — two different views of Martincek's work, one by a newspaperman, an expert on this work Marián Pauer and the other by the curator of the Photographic Collection at the Slovak National Gallery Aurél Hrabusicky. The texts are provided with a detailed documentation supplement. Vissza
