Wild flowers - one of life's greatest pleasures. But formal guides can be rather daunting, especially for the beginner wanting to identify one little flower out of thousands. So this book starts from what we all notice first - the colour.
Over 1,500 species from Britain and Ireland are illustrated here, with a further 400 found in Europe north of the Alps and Mediterranean zone. All are arranged by colour, in the 13 groups shown below.
Within each colour group aU are in their correct scientific families. Each time you look up a flower you leam a little botany, painlessly.
Each flower is shown at roughly life-size (or as otherwise stated). With each is its English name, flowering months, height group, helpful points for identification, and where in Britain or Ireland it grows. Non-British species have their regions of northern Europe shown in [square brackets]. Rowers that occur in different colours are cross-referenced by page, e.g. "(93)".
The introduction explains how the book is organized, the most important Families and the principal types of Habitat - with typical or conspicuous plants to look out for in each. An illustrated Glossary is on pp 184-5
Scientific names are given for each plant in both indexes.
