Every generation needs an outlaw, and as a new millennium began Marilyn Manson is America's Most Wanted. Like a computer game come to life, he's playing a role and inviting us to jóin him in a fantasy world. This is his story, in his own words. I think (being an only child) made me use my imagination more, because I had no-one else to really talk to. So I spent a lot of time making things up, reading and fantasising. I wasn't a goth -1 think maybe I wanted to be but I wasn't cool enough to fit in. I didn't have the confidence, I was invisible, totally insignificant. Marilyn Manson is about pointing out that showbusiness is just such a fake thing and everyone is so full of shit. Marilyn Manson is a name that is so fake it goes beyond that and it becomes real. In a world that is completely full of lies it becomes the one lie worth believing. The other night while we were on stage this girl came running at me, screaming wildly, and tried to put a cigarette out in my eye. I guess our fans can get pretty fanatical. I'm pretty sure everything I do is the worst thing according to the rest of the world but I don't think l've ever really done anything that bad. I don't set out to shock or be offensive. I just do what I like and somé people find that too extreme. There's not much difference between me and Michael Jackson. He and I would probably be friends because we're both looked at as aliens in somé way. I guess I'm the biggest joke I know. l've pulled the biggest joke on music altogether. It's a very dark and nasty, cynical joke. But one I like to laugh at, at the end of the day. I think since the fali of communism, America hasn't had an enemy, so it's had a lot of little enemies. Two years ago it was really me, this past year it was Clinton, hopefully this next year it'll be me again because I enjoyed it immensely. What good would Marilyn Manson be, if no-one hated Marilyn Manson? Vissza
