He finds areas of wooded beauty within a few miles of major cities in the populous Piedmont. The coastal plain odyssey depicts moss-hung cypress swamps, remnants of virgin forest, bright beaches, and the largest estuarine sound on the Atlantic seaboard. This pilgrimage includes the entire coastline of North Carolina and crosses the highest sand dune on the Atlantic Coast. The Outer Banks and coastline include such names as Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and Cape Fear, where the mighty Atlantic reigns undisputed.
