NORTH CAROLINA PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES VALENTINE TEXT BY MARGUERITE SCHUMANN FOREWORD BY WILLIAM FRIDAY North Carolina is a radiant land cloaked in more than twenty millión acres of green forest. Its biological life, natural diversity, and cultural growth is truly a microcosm of eastern America. James Valentine makes an epic photographic journey from his home in Highlands, North Carolina, into the remote Blue Ridge Mountains and along a course that eventually reaches the ocean. His landscapes capture the various moods of the earth, sharing a seasonal celebration of nature that can be experienced by the most intrepid hiker and climber. The images not only capture the wilderness, but seek to display somé of North Carolina's leading cultural and historical landmarks. He travels over six-thousand-foot-high mountain environments containing waterfalls, deep mountain lakes, and the last outposts of the dark, fragrant, evergreen Canadian-type forests. He crosses eastern America's highest mountain and explores the remote backcountry of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. He finds areas of wooded beauty within a few miles of major cities in the populous Piedmont. The coastal plain odyssey depicts moss-hung cypress swamps, remnants of virgin forest, bright beaches, and the largest estuarine sound on the Atlantic seaboard. This pilgrimage includes the entire coastline of North Carolina and crosses the highest sand dune on the Atlantic Coast. The Outer Banks and coastline include such names as Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and Cape Fear, where the mighty Atlantic reigns undisputed. Marguerite Schumann's words take the reader on a road trip across North Carolina, more than five hundred miles wide as the crowflies. From ManteotoMurphy, thechangingappearance ofthe land is recorded, as it climbs from sea level to mile-high peaks. Alsó noted are somé of the historic events that took place along the route. The text discusses the geology, the geography, and the natural life of this varied state, which an early explorer called "the goodliest soil under the cope of heaven."
