He followed his friend Baudelaire's advice to paint contemporary life; he was never deterred by official disapproval; he insisted an the artist's right to draw on earlier artists for his sources, and to handle colour and tone as freely as he wished, in defiance of academic conventions. Velázquez, Goya and Frans Hals all helped to mould Manet's highly personal style, which was based on the use of a limited palette, bold contrasts between light and shadow, and (in his nudes) a direct rendering from the model which scandalized the public of his day. He strongly influenced the impressionists, who in turn influenced him, though he always resented being linked with them. Ironically, however, it was this association with the impressionists that eventually brought Manet, late in life, the academic recognition that until then had always eluded him and that, despite the striking independence of his outlook and his art, he had always ardently desired.
