He commanded no armies, gave up his business, and ended up without wealth of any kind. Yet when he died« assassinated by a fanatic, the representatives of half the countries on earth attended his funeral.
His opponents thought of him as a wily politician, and he was certainly that, because he helped get the British to give up the jewel of their Empire, India, without even a fight.
But to millions of people throughout the world Gandhi was more than this: he was a saint of our time, whose beliefs profoundly influence people working for change to this day. Above all, he challenged the belief that the only way to fight injustice is to use the dirty methods of violence yourself.
