A History of Soviet Russia emphasizes the historic roots of the USSR. As the author says in his preface, "More than sixty years after the Bolshevik coup d'etat, ^ost of the Soviet leaders are better understood as Russians than as Cpmmuiiiists." However, he does not underestimate the role of Communist ideology, but makes it one of the major thenies of his book, while stress!^ its profound evolution and fusion with traditional great RiKsian nationalism.
The book also devotes a great deal of attention to the 29-year period of 1924-1953, the Stalin era, the legacy of which still dominates much of contemporary Soviet reality.
A History of Soviet Russia is a well-organized, balanced presentation that brings to life and illuminates Soviet history. It explains controversial problems with a minimum of jargon and guides the reader through the maze of Soviet history with sound judgment and objectivity.
