Review:
"The eagerly awaited volume II of this monumental work is, like volume I, composed of various chapters each written by a recognized authority. All toxicologists and many other workers, such as clinical and analytical biochemists, will regard these two volumes as essential." — Pathology and Bacteriology

Microaerosols consist of submicroscopic particles (less than 0.2 mu), making possible dispersions of up to 20 million particles per ml. of air. This extremely fine dispersion permits the use of minute quantities of microaerosol compounds in the treatment of the lungs. The total amount of compound used is so small that it has no systemic effect, yet its extremely fine dispersion makes it possible to treat the entire area of the lungs.
Experimental and technical data collected by the author and various co-workers during many years of research on microaerosols is included in this book. Emphasis is given to the production, sampling, management, and biological importance of submicronic and submicroscopic airborne particles, and their physiological, pharmacological, and therapeutic effects after deposition in the respiratory tract. Also included are sections on the use of microaerosols to counteract and prevent damage to the lungs by toxic aerosols.
"It should be in every library used by chemists."

Biochemical Applications of Gas Chromatography
By H. P. BURCHFIELD, Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, Texas
and ELEANOR E. STQRRS, Boyce Thompson Institute, Yonkers, New York
1962, 680 pp., $22.00
This book fulfills a need for a text that supplies both theoretical background and details of the applications of gas chromatography to biochemical problems. Specific procedures are supplied together with enough background information to enable the experimentalist to improvise adaptations without an extensive study of the literature. Although the work is organized along biochemical lines, information is included that will be of value to workers in other fields, such as air pollution and petroleum chemistry.
Contents
General Techniques, Conventions, and Instrumentation. Permanent Gases and Condensable Organic Vapors. Volatile Components of Tissues and Biological Fluids. Cyclic Compounds. Essential Oils. Resin Acids. Lipids. Nonvolatile Components of Tissues. Review of Miscellaneous Applications Related to Biochemistry. Appendixes: Manufacturers of Gas Chromatographs and Auxiliary Equipment; Comparison Table of United States, British, and German Sieve Sizes with Tyler Equivalents; Hazards Associated with the Use of Diazo-methane.
