This book is made up of twenty-eight short passages selected from the works of one of the greatest spiritual writers of the Christian Church-the sixteenth century Spanish monk and mystic, St John of the Cross. In these days of stress and preoccupation, many people who would otherwise have little time or inclination to tackle the complete works of St John might be able to eombine a brief reading with their prayer times and so taste a little of the sublime quality of his writing. Mr. Sidey has placed us in his debt by providing this carefully planned selection, which has a two-fold purpose: first, to introduce the reader to the thought and devotion of St John of the Cross, in the hope that the experience will draw him on to a further acquaintance, and secondly, to do so in the form of short devotional readings to be used as part of daily prayer. In a passage from one of the letters of Báron von Hügel quoted in the Preface stress is laid on the value of such quiet prayerful reading as... Tovább
