LOVE AND HATE, like its title, is an explication of the yin-yang nature of human behavior. lts author heads the research unit in Human Ethology at the Ma/ Planck Institute near Munich. His work has led him to trace human behavior patterns—the shaking of hands,the care of children,the wielding of weaponry—among various cultures, and then eventually back to similar displays among the higher vertebrates.
Eibl-Eibesfeldt does not argüe for predetermined human nature. But he does demónstrate convincingly that many of the patterns of our behavior have been built into the fabric of our genetic inheritance. That isn't necessarily so bad, for men are born with a tremendous capacity for social bonding, and this desirefor bonding beginswith the earliestexpressionsof parental care, such as breast feeding and cuddling.
