LONGMAN DICTIONARY OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH
A totally revised version of the acclaimed dictionary for advanced students of English.
The LONGMAN DICTIONARY OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH gives the fullest possible coverage of the English language as it is used throughout the world today, especially in Britain and North America. The list of words covered in the dictionary has been brought completely up to date, thanks to the extensive Longman Citation Corpus, which enables us to keep track of new developments in the language. All the definitions are written using the 2000-word Longman Defining Vocabulary, making them clear and easy to understand. Detailed guidance on the grammatical behaviour of every word and meaning is given by means of a new easy-to-follow system of grammar codes.
The definitions are supported by over 75,000 lively natural examples, many of them based on authentic material from our citation corpus. The examples also illustrate typical contexts and reinforce information given in the grammar codes. In addition, special attention has been paid in the examples to showing common collocations.
Usage Notes and Language Notes provide detailed information about areas of language that can present particular problems for the learner, especially style and register, choosing the most appropriate word, and the important area of pragmatics — the way certain words and phrases are used in conversation to express indirectly the intentions or feelings of the speaker. Finally, the dictionary takes an innovative approach to illustrations, using them ; j to explain difficult language points in the clearest possible way.
, ; The dictionary has been specially designed for use both as a reference book, and as a learning j resource, to enable you to use language
I effectively and appropriately. Its unique range | ' of features makes the LONGMAN DICTIONARY i OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH the ideal
dictionary for advanced learners and teachers of • j English.
The LONGMAN DICTIONARY OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH was compiled by a team of specialist lexicographers with extensive language teaching experience. The compilers were supported at every stage by the advice of a distinguished panel of consultants, headed by Professor Sir Randolph Quirk, and including Professor Christopher Candlin, Professor David Crystal, and Professor Geoffrey Leech. In addition, the dictionary text has benefited from being read in its entirety by an international panel of academics specializing in English language teaching, including Professor Y Ikegami (University of Tokyo), Professor Mahavir Jain (Indian Institute of Technology), Professor Joan Morley (University of Michigan), and Professor Gabriele Stein (University of Hamburg). Finally, a continuing programme of research into students' reference requirements has enabled us to make the content and organization of the dictionary as relevant as possible to the needs of its users.
The LONGMAN DICTIONARY OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH is one of a series of major English language reference books from Longman. Also specially designed for students are the Longman Lexicon of Contemporary English, the Longman Dictionary of English Idioms, and the Longman Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs. The authoritative guide to English grammar is the internationally acclaimed A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language, also published by Longman. Vissza
