In 1940, the Nazis forced the 200,000 Jews of Lodz, a textile center with the second-largest Jewish population in Europe, into a sealed, internally self-governed ghetto, creating a huge work camp for the German war effort. This soon became a unique international community, as Polish Jews were joined in 1941 by more than 20,000 Jews relocated from Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Luxembourg. By the end of the war, almost all of the ghetto's inhabitants were gone—dead from starvation and exhaustion or sent on to perish in death camps. What survived were these diaries, notebooks, poems, and sketches of ghetto life. Tirelessly gathered from sources around the world, they are brought together here in a powerful, flowing history of the decimation of a city. The authors range from an astute schoolboy to respected European intellectuals; through their words, we enter the horror that was their daily life.

Despite its grim subject, Lodz Ghetto is a beautiful book to read because the writers struggle to cling to their human values; because of their courage, love of their family members and their culture; and it is beautiful, too, in the language they used to cope with the anxiety and confusion of being trapped in the most destructive period of human history.
Richly illustrated, Lodz Ghetto includes more than 140 authentic photographs from the ghetto—some in color and many never previously published.
An unparalleled collection of personal writings that document the progression of the Holocaust through a single community, Lodz Ghetto is a vibrant historical compendium that will remain one of the most important and lasting volumes about this period. Vissza
