Farming is America's number one industry. Yet, the story of modern large scale farming has not been fully told. The image of farming is still apt to be the nostalgic era of bygone days and horse drawn plows. Family farms in marginal ecological areas, trying to hang on, make heart rending stories for the media, but are not always a viable economic unit in today's world.
JACK HARRIS, a legendary leader in the agribusiness community of California, Arizona and throughout the West for over forty years, made front page news of a different sort. As early as 1958 he was determined to demonstrate his theory that the cotton industry did not need government subsidy in order to compete on the world market.
Hailed as a "hair curling gamble," Jack planted 5000 acres of cotton outside the government support program, and willingly made the $1 million payment to the U.S. government in order to market his crop.
The integration of Jack's operations was unique in agriculture. No one else completed the entire cycle quite like he did. Growing thousands of acres of grain and diversified crops, he fed the grain to some 100,000 head of cattle at Harris Feeding Company; processed 800 head of cattle a day through a company owned packing plant; marketed the meat through wholesale outlets, but also made the meat available to retail customers at the Harris Ranch Country Store; and finally cooked and served the meat at his Harris Ranch Restaurant.
This book is about a maris man — who dared to do — and do it first. He was proud to be a farmer, proud to be part of the 2.4% of the U.S. farms that supply 40% of the marketed commodities. His life encompassed dramatic developments in the farming and cattle business, yet he would have changed the subject if one started to list his accomplishments. A rugged individualist, an independent thinker, and a firm believer in free enterprise, he carried his burdens silently, always seeing the light side of life. The title of this book stems from his philosophy that no task was too difficult and he could always pull the load, his or any one else's. His oft-repeated expression, "Don't never mind the mule bein' blind, jist load the wagon," was his trademark.
