It is primarily from the standpoint of an art histórián that the author presents his view of the city, but without neglecting other aspects which go to make up a complete picture of Ljubljana and provide an insight into its exceptional development. Sumi therefore continually turns to archaeology, history and a particular aspect of it - sociology, while at the same time presenting contemporary socio-political trends and ideas which have an impact on the city and its future appearance. This is why his book may be regarded as a culturological essay - an attempt to provide a full and creative explanation of how the cultural and historical heritage is linked to contemporary social life. ; |
Nace Sumi was born in Kranj (Slovenia) in 1924. After graduating from high school, he was interned in Dachau. Nace Sumi was born in Kranj (Slovenia) in 1924. After graduating from high school, he was interned in Dachau. In 1950 he gained a degree in Art History at the Faculty of Philosophy in Ljubljana, and from 1951 to 1962 we was employed in art conservation work in Ljubljana and its surroundings. In 1960 he obtained his doctor's degree, and in 1974 was appointed full professor of the Philosophy Faculty in Ljubljana, for the history of Slovenian art and the art of other Yugoslav nations. From 1966/67 he held an A.V. Humboldt fellowship. The author of a large number of books and articles on Slovenian art, particularly architecture, he is the editor of the Zbornik za umetnostno zgodovino (Art History Journal) and of the anthology ARS SLOVENIAE, Chairman of the Scientific Institute of the Philosophy Faculty, President of the Association of Art History Societies of Yugoslavia, member of the Yugoslav National Committee for Art History and a member of the International Committee for the History of Art (CIHA).
