'An inspirational present for tlie armchair traveller' - Elle Decoration
Morocco: a paradoxical blending of vivid sensuality and intense spirituality. An eclectic mixture of heritages — Berber, Arab, French, English, Spanish — combine in a land that runs from sea-coast to mountain to desert.
Living in Morocco celebrates a country in the midst of a cultural renaissance. King Hassan II's support has breathed life into its indigenous craftsmanship. Its name is synonymous with fine leather, but its pottery also dates back a thousand years. Berber rugs are justly famed, and there is a rich tradition of fine woodworking. Most extraordinary, though, are Moroccan murals and tilework. Forbidden to depict human figures, the Arabs developed a breathtaking vocabulary of pattern and ornament, and the book is filled with vibrantly coloured ceilings, decorated courtyards and walls, plaster of Paris carved and painted in intricate geometries, tiles so small that 150 could fit in a matchbox.
Lavishly illustrated chapters on decorative and folk arts alternate with chapters on Moroccan life today. We visit Chaouen (a city long closed to Westerners) with its almost lunar atmosphere - smooth, undulating surfaces painted a bone-chilling blue-tinted white. We peer into an abandoned kasbah in the Sahara. We shop in the frenzied souk. But most important, we see Morocco's arts brought to life in its homes -from former harems to traditional Hispano-Moorish houses and 19th-century stone and adobe farms.
Glorious photographs of the country make this a treasure for the armchair traveller; whilst the documentation of Morocco's houses, arts and crafts make it an invaluable resource for anyone involved in design.
