A lively, detailed picture of village life in the Middle Ages by the bestselling authors of Life in a Medieval City and Life in a
Medieval Castle
"A social history of a medieval English village, Elton, and through it a look at the ways in which most medieval people passed their lives: their births, marriages and deaths; loves and labors; liturgies and litigations. As is their wont, the Gieses carefully mine a large mountain of human interest and appeal." —David Hcrlihy
Keene Professor of History, Brown University
In this latest addition to their series on life in the Middle Ages, Frances and Joseph Gies have combined the recent discoveries of archaeology with information from contemporary documents to create a lively and convincing portrait of rural people at work and at play seven hundred years ago. In this latest addition to their series on life in the Middle Ages, Frances and Joseph Gies have combined the recent discoveries of archaeology with information from contemporary documents to create a lively and convincing portrait of rural people at work and at play seven hundred years ago. Focusing on the village of Elton, in the English East Midlands, the authors show medieval peasants not merely as tenants and elements in the manorial system, but as members of a village community, who plant their own fields and those of their lord, administer village affairs, sue and are sued in the manorial court, and relate to one another in ways that surprisingly transcend their status as "free" or "villein." The authors describe the peasants' food, housing, and family life; the threatening tensions between them and the lord of the manor; and the place of the church in their lives. Though the main focus is on Elton, c. 1300, the Gieses supply enlightening historical context in an account of the origin, development, and decline of the European village, itself an invention of the Middle Ages.
Frances and Joseph Gies are the authors, i, together and separately, of twenty-one books, including Women in the Middle Ages and The Knight in History. They live on a lake near Ann Arbor, Michigan, and have three grown children and three grandchildren. Vissza
