Lewis Carroll wrote the "Alice books" as entertainments for Victorian children, and they have held the attention of adult readers ever since. This Norton Critical Edition provides the materials for a balanced study of the texts and of the several interests they engage. The texts of Alices Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass follow the 1897 edition; the text of The Hunting of the Snark is from that of the 1876 edition. Interest in the Alice stories compels interest in the man Lewis Carroll-Charles Dodgson, and so the editor of this Norton Critical Edition has woven together, in the Backgrounds section, accounts of the early life and writings, of the writing of the Alice books, and of the later life. Represented here are entries from Dodgson's diaries, selections from early poems and from "Alice's Adventures Under Cround," reminiscences, and other biographical sources.
The Essays in Criticism have been chosen to exemplify the several frames in which Alice has been studied. The essays consider the texts as nineteenth-century children's literature; as manifestations of characteristic Victorian sensibilities; as a game using ideas about language, about philosophy, about mathematics; and as a basis for psychoanalytic investigation.
