Leonardo da Vinci exemplified the genius, the aspirations, and the diversity of achievement we have come to associate with the Italian Renaissance. Rivaled by few artists in history as painter, sculptor, and architectural theorist, his contributions to the fields of engineering, military science, anatomy, and music (to name but a few of his interests) were of unique scope and significance.
This superbly illustrated volume allows the reader to explore the full range of Leonardo's brilliant and multifaceted career while focusing on his contribution to the form of artistic expression he valued most highly—the art of painting. Along with such well-known works as the Last Supper and the Mona Lisa, all of those paintings known to be either fully or in part by Leonardo are reproduced here—often with stunning details—in full color. In addition, although primary emphasis rests on the paintings, a special section is devoted to his incomparable drawings, including a generous selection of... Tovább

In addition, although primary emphasis rests on the paintings, a special section is devoted to his incomparable drawings, including a generous selection of material from Leonardo's famous notebooks.
In the accompanying text Jack Wasserman, Professor of Art History at Temple University in Philadelphia and an expert on Leonardo, provides the reader with invaluable guidance in understanding this complex genius. Professor Wasserman's lucid introductory essay and his individual commentaries on each of the paintings include sensitive stylistic observations on individual works, an illuminating discussion of the artist's personality and of the events that shaped his career, and informed judgments on the authenticity of various attributions. Professor Wasserman's discussion of the notebooks olfers additional insight into the artist's thought. Selecting representative examples from these voluminous works, he elucidates the vast knowledge that Leonardo acquired through his untiring observation and inspired analysis of the phenomena of the natural world.
The abundant illustrations include 48 beautiful full-page colorplates. A biographical outline, a selected bibliography, and an index add to the value of this absorbing volume.
139 illustrations, including 48 hand-tipped plates in full color Vissza
